چکیده

0 Third, a multimedia object may consist of multiple components: audio, video and text. Synchronization of these multiple streams are of necessity. We present techniques for managing disks as a bufer .for the tertiary storuge ofmidtimedia servers. A unified disk space is used to not only cache fiequently referenced objects, but also to provide staging buffers, foiplaying back objects. A new staging technique and three bufei . replacenient policies are investigated. The simulation results indicate that the staging method is very efficient, and each of the replacement policies ofers significant additional improvement. Some of the peyfbrmance issues are also analyzed analytically. The mathematical model provides guidelines, for good m ultini ediu systems design using the proposed techniques.

BiHOP: A Bidirectional Highly Optimized Pipelining Technique for Large-Scale Multimedia Servers

We present a technique, called Bidirectional Highly Optimized Pipelining (BiHOP), for managing disks as a buffer for the tertiary storage of a multimedia server. We implement a simulator to compare its performance to that of a recently proposed scheme called SEP. The results show that BiHOP performs significantly better. Its superior performance is attributed to a novel caching approach which c...

A novel data caching scheme for multimedia servers

In this paper, we propose a Bi-directional Fragmental Pipelining (BFP) technique and its variable buffer size data-caching scheme BFPV to reduce the disk I/O bandwidth requirement for multimedia servers. Our mathematical analysis shows that the BFP technique is superior to the traditional unidirectional pipelining technique in terms of memory buffer space requirement. We further demonstrate tha...

An Efficient Buffer Management Scheme for Multimedia File System ∗

File system buffers provide memory space for data being transferred to and from disk and act as caches for the recently used blocks, and the buffer manager usually reads ahead data blocks to minimize the number of disk accesses. However, if several multimedia files with different consumption rates are accessed simultaneously from the file system in which LRU buffer replacement strategy is used,...

A Bandwidth Management Technique for Hierarchical Storage in Large-Scale Multimedia Servers

Using magnetic disks as a cache for tertiary storage has been shown to be an effective way to address the high storage costs of large-scale multimedia servers. We investigate a technique for managing the bandwidth of such a hierarchical storage design. In existing schemes, all data items are treated equally; and the same I/O rate is used to load data from tertiary storage when they are requeste...

Disk-oriented VCR operations for a multiuser VOD system

Future high-speed computer networks are projected to carry dizzying array of networked multimedia applications including digital libraries, video and image servers, distance learning collaboration, networked virtual environments, and entertainment. A common threat to these applications is the so-called continuous nature of the data. Video-on-demand (VOD) application is a networked multimedia ap...
